The Ramblers Association now have a greatly improved website which is an exceptional rescource for all walkers, hykers and young families wanting to go for walks with young children. This site lists everything from historical walks to guided walks and really audious walks.

Find A Walk Near Me by Walking Britain is a truly excellent and free resource. Just enter where you are or where you would like to walk - and print out directions. The walks are graded and you can buy a specific map of the area at the same time. These are proper OS maps and weather proofed if required.

I always think of walking as one of the few activities you can do for free - and now you can with this guide!

Walking, Hiking and Outdoor Shops

Cotswold Outdoor London - Holborn

311-318 High Holborn, London WC1V 7BN, UK – 020 7831 9957

Great experience here. A proactive and helpful lady in the lower floor gave me and another customer top advice on the best boots to wear for our respective trips. The boots I wanted weren't available in my size but rest assured they arrived the next day. I suggest trying out any boots on the mini ramp they have by the mirror - good way to test their comfort.

Helpful and knowledgeable staff. Happy to spend time with customers to make sure the right bus if equipment are bought

Cotswold Outdoor London - Piccadilly

23/26 Piccadilly, Mayfair, London W1J 0DJ, UK – 020 7437 7399

Well laid out, good choice, helpful and knowledgeable staff. Nice central location makes it easily accessed by public transport.

The selection here is not that good! Every other cotswold I have been in has been great though so don't judge the others by this ones standards!

Cotswold Outdoor London - Covent Garden

8 Southampton St, London WC2E 7HA, UK – 020 7379 3060

When they are good they are very very good, but when they are bad I go to Ellis Brigham (almost next-door) instead. Variable levels of customer advice/service. Probably depends on how busy they are, or who you get. They have lost a lot of business from me by not giving me enough attention. Their loss is Ellis Brigham's gain.

The staff are either really passionate and a bit OTT with the detail or seem sleepy and disinterested. The shop itself has a decent amount of outdoor gear tho it seems like it could be better laid out as the bags are almost hidden away and the women's/men's clothing blends into one.

WalkingWorld.jpg
Another good one. Walkingworld has huge library of guides with a good selection of walks, of varying lengths and grades, pretty well anywhere in the country. The walks come in an excellent format making them very easy to follow, with photographs to illustrate every important decision point and a proper Ordnance Survey map.

A modist annual subscription gives you unlimited access to all the walks. However you can Pay As Go by downloading indiviual walks..

Camping and Caravaning

Mountain Warehouse

3 Southampton St, London WC2E 7HA, UK – 020 7379 1414

Here you can find pretty good quality outdoor clothing in different styles and colours. The offers are quite good.

Went there with a friend who needed a new backpack. The staff at the counter were extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Explaining, in detail, all of the bags many pockets/pouches/features. They also explained how to adjust and fit the bag properly and how to releave weight on certain areas. From what I was expecting (for a shop in central London) they went well above and beyond. It really shows these guys not only enjoy their work but also are interested in the great outdoors.

Army Surplus and Camping

Arch Gallery, 37A The Cut, London SE1 8LF, UK – 020 7928 4110

Great Aladdins cave! Lovely chap running the shop. Recommended for all your camping, army surplus needs etc!!

Lovely bloke that runs this place. Good gear for decent prices.

Waterloo Camping

37 The Cut, London SE1 8LF, UK – 020 7928 4110

Really great shop with so much in it, it is actually packed to the walls. The staff are really great and helpful. I hardly purchased a pair of trousers and the zipper was broken. They replaced it with no questions asked. I would recommend anyone looking for surplus or camping supplies to stop in here. You will be surprised when you can find.

A good shop, and helpful staff but, the staff seem to just make the prices up, the quality is okay, not the best but it's good as a last resort if you need last minute things that you cannot order before your trip
